10 Helpful Tips For Pumping Breast Milk At Work

Ten tips for pumping breast milk at work

pumping breast milk at work

We all know the importance of breastfeeding for babies. But many moms like me need to step out of the home while our babies are young due to our work commitments.

However, this doesn’t mean that the child will be devoid of the nutritious breast milk. The modern electric and manual pumps (to an extent) help moms like me to pump out the milk to be fed to the baby by the caregiver while we are away at work. So lets see the options which makes pumping breast milk at work easy.

I opted for this option when my son was born. I needed to join back at work after 84 days of my maternity leave, and I was so overwhelmed thinking about how will my baby’s requirement be met out.

My friend gifted me Philips Manual Avent pump and it was working well while i was still at home. I started using it and storing breast milk to maintain my stock.

It also helped me in getting familiar with the pump and know the reaction of my body towards pump which finally made pumping breast milk at work easy for me.

So, I am sharing my experience here, though I’m not an expert but i will write what are the things that helped me in pumping breast milk at work and how I wish I had known about it earlier when my daughter was born. Here are the ten helpful tips for pumping breast milk at office.

BREASTFEED WHENEVER YOU CAN

So after expiration of maternity leaves i joined back the work and my 9 hours of outside the home period started. I used to nurse my son before I leave home for the office, and then once I’m back at home, and then through the night on demand. This kept the closeness and realness one feels when the baby feeds directly.

It kept the good hormone in my body which comes when you breastfeed. Also baby and I experienced the bond which is essential between mother and child.

SCHEDULE PUMP TIME IN OFFICE

In the beginning i used to pump thrice at same time. I set an alarm so that i get reminded because when you engorged in work you forget pumping and may miss a session.

When my son completed 6 months and started eating solids i reduced my pumping session to 2. Now again i keep the same rule of pumping at fixed time.

KEEP EXTRA PAIR OF CLOTHES & BREAST PADS

I use to keep an extra top or a towel to keep myself neat in the case of any spillage while pumping session. I stored them in my office drawer. If you do not have a drawer you can carry them daily or store them in your car/two wheeler.

FINDING A PLACE TO PUMP AT OFFICE

Now a days most offices have mothers room or pumping room but if you do not find any such room, i suggest you talk to your HR or manager to get a temporary room to pump.

Please do not pump in bathroom. Just talk to people, i am sure you will get some arrangement.

Take a water bottle with you in the room and drink water as much as you can before starting the session. I got this advice from someone and it worked for me.

AN INSULATED BAG TO STORE

You need a  insulated bag to store your milk, also a bag to store your pump and accessories. Medella and many other brands have this kind of bag. I already have some local insulated bag so i just bought cool pad and the system worked perfect for me.

KEEP EXTRA STORAGE BAGS OR CONTAINERS

Certain days when I need to pump a little more so I always kept extra storage bags or containers I bought online from Amazon.in to store my pumped milk neatly.

I used to keep the pumped out milk in the fridge of our office canteen till the time I was there in the office. Nuby had a set of 3 which was very affordable and sturdy.

Sometimes I forgot to carry the required quantity of containers, then these bags came extremely handy.

LOOK AT YOUR BABY’s PHOTOS ON PHONE

At times, due to work pressure and stress I use to get very irritated, the milk just wouldn’t come out. So I used to look at my baby’s pictures it helped in releasing the oxytocin, which made my milk flow as well. This is one of the most important tips.

PUMP A LOT

Pumping till you feel that everything out makes your supply up. As we all know as much you feed your body and mind works to produce more milk.

You might feel yourself like a cow but this is another important tip. Following it.

I used to get approx 130 ml in 1st session, 110 ml in 2nd session and 90-100 ml in 3rd session.

BE CONFIDENT ABOUT YOUR SUPER POWER

Never feel embarrassed about the pumping session. The more normal and confidently you take it the better you feel and so your supply would be up.

Obviously, in the beginning, you might feel shy and a little uncomfortable, but be confident about that you are doing it to give the best for your baby.

NEVER GIVE UP

For every new and even second-time mom (like me) breastfeeding is difficult and to pump at the office is all the more difficult. It has happened to me at times I used to think to give up.

I used to feel so tired and stressed. But remember that it is for your baby, your precious little being. So never give up till you have milk.

Remember, only one thing that this is the best food for your baby that only you can give. So don’t afraid and make pumping breast milk at work a practice.

So those were some of my tricks and tips which helped me in coming this far and made my pumping breast milk at work journey cheerful. If you have any suggestions and tips, please do share to inspire moms around the world.

Hey Minakshi, this is a great post. Pumping at work can be hard work. We have a new electric breast pump that is extremely, extremely quiet so you can use it at work without people hearing any noise (which can make some mothers feel self conscious). We’re looking for bloggers who might like to review the pump.. if you’re interested please let me know. Best wishes for your pumping journey, you are doing a great job! ~ Maire from Pumpables Team
